Test Preparation Courses

Program Goals: The Test Preparation Courses, which can be delivered to individuals or small groups, prepare students for high-stakes testing events, including FCAT, Duke TIP, SAT, ACT, GED, GRE, ASVAB, FTCE, and others with a special emphasis on test-taking strategies specific to that assessment. 

Who: Students in elementary school, middle school, high school, and college
When: As needed; SAT is offered seven times per year at LRC site
Where: Learning Resource Center (or at other sites as requested)
What: Test-taking strategies that build confidence and reduce test anxiety with highly trained teachers.
How: Review of relevant content and application of research-based problem-solving techniques with highly-trained instructors

Since the Learning Resource Center employs over 350 master teachers and subject field experts as adjunct instructors, LRC is poised to meet the needs for High Stakes Testing Preparation—FCAT, SAT, ACT, GED, AP, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, GMAT and Teacher Certification Tests to name a few with which LRC students have had success.

Here is more detailed information about several of the programs:

SAT (and PSAT) and ACT (and PACT):

  • With a long history of successful students, LRC’s Preparation Courses assist students in preparing for college entrance exams with a special emphasis on test-taking strategies.
  • Activity-oriented lessons help students apply problem-solving techniques to achieve their best possible scores. Students learn test-taking strategies that build confidence and reduce test anxiety.
  • Preparation courses offer small class instruction with highly trained or teachers and practice tests. LRC guarantees that if a student attends all class sessions, the SAT or ACT score will improve, or the student may retake the class as often as desired free of charge.
  • Students may prep for one or all areas of the test.
  • Individual (one-to-one) tutoring is also available.

Duke TIP SAT:

  • The Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) SAT is designed for high ability 7 th grader students interested in pursing admission to college.
  • LRC’s Preparation Program acquaints students with the SAT test format and types of questions.
  • The program incorporates test-taking strategies with practice tests to build confidence and reduce test anxiety
  • Eligibility for the Duke TIP SAT program has the following prerequisites:
    • Only for 7 th grade students who have scored at the 95 percentile or above on math or verbal achievement on a standardized achievement or aptitude test.
    • Students must have registered with Duke University to take the test. (Test applications are available from the school guidance office.)
  • Small group instruction is usual, but individual one-to-one tutoring can be arranged.

FCAT:

  • With access to fourth grade and obtainment of a high school diploma dependent on FCAT scores, success with this high stakes test is critical for students.
  • LRC has developed an academic coaching program that is designed to help students achieve their best possible score on the FCAT tests.
  • Small group or individual instruction is available.

GED:

  • This course is designed to assist students who are preparing to take the General Educational Development Test.
  • The program provides test-taking strategies, combined with a review of the five area tests’ content.
  • Small group or individual instruction is available.
